Soham Grammarians - Mr RN Joiner, English 1953-58

Soham Grammarian Autumn 1953

Mr Joiner has taken over from Mr Johnson in the English department and on the Magazine staff, and we wish him a long and successful stay with us

Soham Grammarian Summer 1958

It is with regret that we announce the departure of Mr RN Joiner, who has been Senior English Master for five years. His unsparing effort and enthusiasm in the cause of School dramatic productions will not be quickly forgottten.

21 Nov 2007: Peter Stonebridge 50-54: Mr Joiner took over when Mr Johnson (Bish) retired in 1953 and immediately inherited the nickname Archie! The reasoning being that if Mr Johnson was a Bish, then surely Mr Joiner would start off as an ArchBish, which of course was shortened to Archie. I don't know how long that name stuck as I left in the Summer of 1954.

He took up residence in our village and was often to be spotted riding his BSA Bantam 2 stroke M/C to the shop (we only had one!). Because the engine was well worn he left a trail of oily smoke behind him wherever he went, which the Red Arrows would be proud of! He introduced more readable books for the GCE Literature syllabus as an alternative to Shakespeare and Chaucer. When I had to change schools in my final year I was again faced with the good old fashioned choices, or study my SGS books on my own - the new school could give me no practical help. I succeeded because I really enjoyed this new style of literature for coursework.
