SCOUT NEWS

This term our meetings have been rather irregular owing to the weather and to the 'flu epidemic: The meetings, however, that have been held have been fairly successful. There is great keenness to finish important tests before the Summer Camp, when badge-work is likely to be in full swing.

The system of awarding marks for attendance, the passing of tests, and so on, has proved very successful, and great rivalry is shown among the patrols.

On February 5th, Captain King, the District Commissioner, paid us a visit, and an interesting meeting was spent in tests and badge-work.

Efforts have been made to brighten up the Scout Room. Coloured curtains representing patrol colours have been put up at the windows, and the fretwork experts have contributed Scout gadgets.

The Summer Camp this year will be in Devon in the neighbourhood of Lynton. Arrangements are being made for the Troop to take part in the selling and distribution of Coronation souvenirs on May 12th.

SCOUT NOTES

This term has been a most active one for the whole troop. We have concentrated mostly on First Aid during the meetings, but other activities have not been neglected. Several of the senior Scouts hope to obtain their First Class Badge by the end of term. Several successful First Class Journeys have been carried out by the seniors, and brief accounts will be found below. During the term Taylor (J) has gained his Second Class Badge, and several others have passed Second Class tests.

The Owl Patrol were patrol champions last term, with the Hawk Patrol second. A week-end camp was held June 25-27 in the School Field, and 26 Scouts had a grand time, being favoured with good weather. This year our Annual Camp will be held near Lynton, North Devon. Twenty-three Scouts and two Scouters will travel there by train on Friday, July 23rd. Our camping gear has been supplemented by the purchase of a new store tent; this replaces one which has done service for many years.

P/L C Parker and NC Field did their First Class journey on June 5-6, and camped at Mildenhall. They had very fine weather, and although unable to light fires, for it was Forestry Commission land, they fared sumptuously.

G Dann and H Cook cycled to Castle Rising and Hunstanton on June 11-13. Although fine weather attended them for two days, rain marred their return.

P/L P Pledger and P/L R Cogbill held their camp at Kennet from April 3-5. They were unfortunate in not having very pleasant weather.

P/L P Lovering and S Plumb cycled to Icklingham on June 26-27. The weather was excellent and camp site perfect.

All the above-named are working well for their First Class Badge, and it is hoped that Lovering and Parker will pass theirs before camp.
