Soham Grammarians - Scouting School Year 1940-41

Soham Grammarian Autumn 1940

SCOUT NOTES

There has not been much to report this term, as, owing to the early black-out, there have been no scout meetings for most of the term. At the beginning of the term our new members were taken into the shrubbery, and initiated into the art of cooking over a wood fire, sometimes with disastrous results.

This term we have lost P/L's Taylor and Turner, Squire and Smith, P being promoted to their places

We welcome nine new members this term, and they are all well on their way towards their Tenderfoot Badge.

The Soham Scouts have been helping with the Soham waste-paper collection, while scouts in other villages have been helping the local ARP organisations.

Despite the lack of meetings several new badges have been gained.

SCOUT NOTES

This term we regret to announce the departure on Government service of Mr Lait, who had been ASM for the last five years. To fill the vacancy, Thompson was appointed Acting ASM with Pledger, Smith, E and Smith, P as his assistants.

Owing to the large number of recruits, which brought the strength of the Troop up to the record number of 49 scouts, it was decided to reform the patrols on a regional basis; and a new patrol, the Eagles, with Alps as its P/L, was created for the Scouts from Stretham and district.

The new patrols are,
Ely: - Owls, P/L Lancaster; Woodpeckers, P/L Morriss;
Soham: - Hawks, P/L Talbot; Peacocks, P/L Thorby;
Newmarket and district: Peewits, P/L Squire.

Owing to the blackout, evening meetings were impossible until half-term, but work has now begun with great keenness and many badges have been gained. These include 7 Tenderfoot Badges, and Alps, Whitta and Thorby have gained their Second Class Badges. Pledger has passed the Marksman and Interpreter Badges, and Thompson the Artist, Cook, Interpreter and Ambulance Man, Badges. In addition several of the seniors have nearly gained their First Class Badge, and will undoubtedly do so when the finer weather permits them to do their out-of-doors tests.

SCOUT NEWS

Thanks to the fine weather this term, our outdoor activities have greatly increased. The new Eagle patrol held a week-end camp in the School Field, and "a good time was had by all." One evening was spent by the Troop in building a bridge over the ditch in the shrubbery. Several seniors have done their journey, and badgework is as flourishing as ever.

The new patrol system is, on the whole, working well, although some P/L's have been less enterprising than others. We must congratulate P/L Lancaster on obtaining his First Class Badge, and P/L Morriss and Fisk on obtaining their Second Class. P/L's. E. Smith, and Lancaster have obtained their Ambulance Man Badges.

Many other Proficiency Badges have also been gained, as have two All Round Cords. We hope that there will soon be some King's Scouts in the Troop. Attendances have been as good as ever, and subscriptions have reached the record total of nearly two pounds.

AASM AJ THOMPSON

The continued success of the Troop is due largely to the energy and efficiency of Acting ASM AJ Thompson and his helpers, who have put in some very good work this term. I take this opportunity of thanking them.
