Soham Grammarians - Scouting School Year 1944-45

Soham Grammarian Autumn 1944

SCOUT NOTES

During the summer holidays the school troop managed to fix up only one camp, which was held in the Fordham Abbey Park at the beginning of August. The surroundings were most congenial to camping, especially the fine woods which provided welcome shade on hot days and also furnished us with firewood.

The normal camp activities were carried out, and many scouts passed their cooking and fire-lighting tests-and the cooks prepared some very palatable meals, We were very pleased to welcome some of the boys' parents, one party of which spent a most enjoyable day with us. Of course, we took advantage of all the facilities for recreation and on one particular evening a few of our number paid a visit to the Newmarket cinema.

Some of the more industrious scouts went harvesting on an adjacent farm and came back only for meals; thus they managed to turn their scouting holiday into a paying proposition!

None of these activities could have been planned, however, without the kindness of Mr. Frank Turner, who so readily allowed us to pitch camp in his park. We offer him our best thanks.
