Soham Grammarians - Scouting School Year 1971-72

Venture Scouts

The Venture Scout unit with ten members has had regular Friday afternoon meetings, including wine making, archery, firefighting and swimming in the programme. Other features of the year were social evenings with the Ranger Guides, a visit to Cambridge Fire Station and an afternoon map-reading in Thetford Chase. County Venture Scout events supported included a weekend course at Burwell House, mountaincraft lectures and a practical session in North Wales, and a sailing weekend at Mepal.

Scouts

This has been a year of real development for the school Scout Troop. We began the year with six Patrols though there were vacancies in all of these. These places were soon filled by new members and the patrols under the leadership of Stephen Bullman; Geoff Double, Paul Murfitt, Peter Taylor, Shaun McCormack and Stephen Oakey settled down to the year. The major achievement of the term was the Falcon's success in retaining the indoor football trophy. Michael Clark was declared 'Scout of the term'.

The second term was marked by the admission of a number of new recruits from the Village College and the number of patrols was increased to eight with Anthony Noble and Michael Clark being the new patrol leaders. It was decided to award the champion patrol mallet twice this year with this change and Ravens proved themselves worthy champions for the first half of the year, though Falcons and Woodpeckers gave notice that they would find it hand to keep the trophy in the second half of the year. Michael Finch was this term's 'Scout of the term'.

The summer term is still in progress as I write these notes but already Michael Finch and Michael Hawes have led Patrols at the County Camp. Stephen Oakey, Garry Taylor and Stephen Cornwell gained the Platt Scout Prizes.

Plans are now well advanced for this year's summer camp at Walesby in Nottingham when thirty-six members of the troop are already assured of a warm welcome from Mr and Mrs Parker. For this expedition the troop will be joined by Kenneth Grant, Roy Claringbold and Malcolm Bucknell who will be acting as Headquarters staff.
